Barry Royce Coe

Barry Royce Coe, age 72, of Mount Vernon, Texas passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at his home. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.

Barry was born to the Billy Roy Coe and the late Billie Patricia Banks Coe Stephenson on May 1, 1948 in Winnsboro, Texas.  He married Vivian Lee Bransom on January 11, 1969 in Mount Vernon. 

Barry grew up in the Mount Vernon and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1966. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in English and theatre from East Texas State University in 1970 and a masters degree in English from there in 1976.

He taught English and drama for both middle and high school students at the Oakridge school in Arlington from 1985 until his retirement in 2018. Barry was a master story-teller and enjoyed using dramatic flair in his class lectures. “Barry Coe was a huge presence and a major influence to so many kids at Oakridge over the years,” recounted a former student. He was the driving force in countless musical, dramatic plays, and student symposiums. He also sponsored countless dances, taught ballroom dancing to students, and sponsored school trips.

Barry was a mentor to many students and fellow teachers who needed inspiration, compassion, and care. He and his wife Vivian acted as surrogate parents to many students and hosted international students through the years. Prior to Oakridge, he taught at various schools districts, including Quitman and Burleson. He served as an adjunct professor for Tarrant County Community College,  also traveled around the country to grade advanced placement English exams.

He was preceded in death by his mother. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Vivian Lee Coe of Mount Vernon; international students who were like sons, Wei Chen and Wei Yen and his fur babies, Dickens, Binx, and Pepper; brother, Ronald Ray Coe of Rio Communities, New Mexico; nephews, Shane Coe of Texas and Brian Coe of Virginia; and aunts Neda and Buck Carr and Judy Banks, all of Mount Vernon.
