Byron Gilbert Obituary

Byron “Bullman” Lynn Gilbert, age 68 of Mount Vernon, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 1, 2020.

Byron was born on October 6, 1952, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to his loving parents, Harold Lynn and Maxine LaRue Humphrey Gilbert. He was the oldest of four children, the only son and was adored by his younger sisters.

2 weeks before his 16th birthday, Byron suffered a devastating brain injury while playing Highschool football for the Mineral Wells Rams. He was a dedicated student and athlete, excelling in both the classroom and on the field. He was admired and respected by students and teachers. After his injury in 1968, he was honored as the Most Valuable Player of Mineral Wells Highschool. His jersey number 65 was retired and the sports section of the Mineral Wells yearbook was dedicated to him. When he was just 16 and on the road to recovery, The Oakland A’s met with his parents in hopes of signing him to play pro baseball, his true passion and ultimate life goal.

After miraculously surviving his injury, Byron went on to live a full, happy, Christ-centered life, sharing his testimony and his love for Jesus with every single person he met. To know him was to love him. Bullman was always ready with a joke (or ten,) and he loved a good game of dominoes, even more so if he was winning.

Byron was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Brenda Gilbert, his sister Debra Walling and his nephew Otto Charles Walling IV.

Byron is survived by his sister Diana Cox and husband Neal, of Mount Vernon, Texas, his niece, Amy Briscoe and husband Jeff, of Mount Vernon Texas, his niece Charlotte Walling, of Mount Vernon, Texas and a host of great nieces and nephews.
