Charles E. Jones, age 97, of Mount Vernon passed away Saturday, June 20, 2020.
Graveside services with Military Honors and Masonic Rites are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 25, 2020 at Providence Cemetery with L.C. Jones officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 24, 2020 from 6-8 p.m. at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home.
Charles was born September 28, 1922 in Majors, TX to Charlie and Alta V. Lovelace Jones.
Charles was a pilot and retired as a Major from the U.S. Airforce after 23 years of service. He participated in the India-Burma Theater of Operations as a Transport Pilot during World War II and served in Korea as a T-6 pilot during the Korean Conflict. During both periods of combat, he was recognized for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight and was credited with a total of 253 combat hours and 100 combat missions. Overseas service included assignments in the Caribbean, India, Germany, Korea, Argentina, and Puerto Rico.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 60 years, Sally Jones; sister, Marguerite Lipp; brother-in-law, Max Rutledge.
He is survived by his daughter, Vicki Bond and husband Louis; sister, Joy Rutledge; 4 grandchildren, Charles Atkison, Chad Atkison, Kelli Conradson, Timothy Bond; 9 great grandchildren, Blossom Barnett, Khalel Clay, Temperance Conradson, C.E. Conradson, Landon Atkison, Nick Bond, Tom Bond, Kjell Conradson, Kahlea Bowler; and 4 great-great grandchildren.
