Charles Winfield Obituary

Charles William Winfield, age 92, of Mount Vernon, Texas, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025 in Sulphur Springs, Texas, to be with his Lord and Savior.

Charles was born to Joseph and Magdalene (Ingverdsen) Winfield on July 8, 1933, in Needville, Fort Bend County, Texas.

Charles married his college sweetheart, Dorothy Tucker, on July 11, 1954.

Charles dedicated his life to service—service to his country, to education, to his community, and to his faith. He joined the United States Army in 1955 and was stationed in Italy, proudly representing his nation abroad. After completing his military service, he pursued higher education and earned a Master’s degree in Education, beginning a long and influential career as an educator.

Over the years, he served as a teacher, coach, and superintendent, touching countless lives with his leadership, guidance, and commitment to young people. His contributions to the community were recognized when he was named the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, a testament to the respect and admiration he earned from those around him.

He was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church, where he also sung in the choir and lent his talents to many church committees. His dedication to civic and community service extended far beyond the school system, as he generously gave his time to numerous local boards and organizations.

A highlight of his career came with his induction into the Hall of Honor at Mt. Vernon ISD, recognizing his lasting impact on education and the community he loved.

Charles will be remembered as a man of character—steadfast, compassionate, and deeply committed to making a difference wherever he served.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; his father, Joseph Winfield; his mother, Magdalene Winfield; brothers, Vernon and Ervin Winfield; half-brothers, William and Jon Winfield.

Charles is survived by his son, Allan and wife, Diana Winfield; his daughter, Margaret Helene and husband, Dyke McMahen; grandson, Westley and Diana Moss, David Winfield, Sean and Molly Jackson, Scott and Lindsey Jackson; 6 great-grandsons, special family members, Adele Ciruti and Megan Elder; sister, Florence Thonsgard; half-brothers, Max, Robert, Joe, Steve, and Jerry Winfield; half-sisters, Carol Lipe, Linda Chance and Sharon Winfield.
