Jerry Tom Bennett, age 87, of Mount Vernon, Texas, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2026 in Mount Pleasant, Texas.
Jerry was born March 8, 1939, in Saltillo, Texas, to Coy and Floy (Wagner) Bennett. He graduated from East Texas College in Commerce with a bachelor's degree and spent several years teaching school. Though he enjoyed teaching, his true passion was raising, training, and racing Quarter Horses, a pursuit he dedicated nearly 60 years to. Jerry was a simple man who found happiness in the things he loved most—his horses, his work, and especially his dogs, who were his constant companions throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Coy and Floy Bennett; his wife, Kathy Davis; an infant daughter, Kimberly Bennett; the mother of his children, LaJuanda Christenberry Bennett; his sister, Wynell Anderson.
Jerry is survived by his children, William Bryan Bennett, Kelly (Bob) Thomas, Jerry Sloan (Stephanie) Bennett; grandchildren, Taylor (Ashley) Ward, Kimberly Thomas, Jessica Thomas, Carlee Bennett and Cheyenne and Tyler Bennett; great grandchildren, Haygen Convillian, Kara Thomas, Kylie Thomas, Riley Thomas, and a host of extended family members.
There will be a family-led celebration of life service at a later date.
