John H. Reeves, III was born April 30, 1956, on the military base at Ft. Monmouth, N.J. He was the first child for John H. and Betty Needham Reeves. The family also lived in Illinois and Tennessee prior to settling in Plano, TX in 1969. He participated in Boy Scouts and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Plano High School in 1975. Through the years, John ran heavy earth moving equipment, worked as a master mechanic for Nissan, and managed a manufacturing floor for a telecommunications company.
He married Susan Banks Reeves on September 25, 1982. They raised three daughters. In 2003, the family moved to Mount Vernon and operated the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald until July 2021 when he retired. During this time, he won numerous photography awards through the North and East Texas Press Association, including the Photographer of the Year award in 2016, 2017 and 2019. He served as a member of the Mount Vernon Rotary Club, a member of the Franklin County Genealogical Society, and enjoyed serving the people of Franklin County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Betty Reeves, and his grandparents Truman and Minnie Reeves and Brantley and Anna Needham.
John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan. Three daughters and spouses: Jacquelyn and Chase Phillips, Kaitlyn and Daniel White, and Madison and Alex Clingan; six grandchildren: John Wayne, Jayson Thomas, James Hartwell, and Josie Belle Phillips, and Ethan Daniel and Cole Harrison White; his sister and husband, Cheryl and Scott Bellamy; and brother-in-law and wife, Rick and Linda Banks.
Visitation will be on Monday, September 23, 2024, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home and the Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon with Pastor Pepper Puryear officiating. Pallbearers will be Rick Banks, Scott Bellamy, James Campbell, Jack Carlson, Chase Phillips, and Daniel White. Interment will be at Indian Mound Cemetery in Graham, Texas.
