Roy Alton Carr, age 97, of Mount Vernon, Texas passed away Monday, December 29, 2025, in Tyler, Texas.
Roy was born to Carl F. and Maggie (Owens) Carr on August 24, 1928, in Franklin County, Texas.
He was the youngest of 4 children and grew up working on a farm. After graduating Mt. Vernon High School, he moved to Dallas at the age of 18 where he started working for Sears Roebuck in the men's clothing department. Not long after, he caught the eye of Helen. Roy always laughed when telling the story of how she was after him. He married the love of his life, Helen, on May 6, 1950. They had two children, Owen and Helen (Elaine) while they lived in Dallas. In 1964, Roy and his family moved back to Mt. Vernon. Roy was approved as an inspector for the City of Mt. Vernon to perform inspections at the Newsome Meat Packers. He helped milk cows on his son's dairy as well. Working with cows can be exciting, especially when a cow is not able to walk and has to be loaded into an old bathtub and dragged to safety. Roy also worked as a butcher at his brother's grocery store, Home Town Foods until it was bought out. After retiring, Roy enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family, and serving in church.
Roy was a member of First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon for many years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 75 years, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Helen; son, Owen Carr; parents; Carl and Maggie Carr; two sisters, Hortense Carr and Kate Lucille Carr McNish; brother, R.B. Carr
Roy is survived by his daughter and husband, Elaine and Jerry Collins; grandchildren, Mandy Martin and husband, Tully, Brandon Carr and wife, Katie, Rhonda Smith and husband, Stephen, Clint Collins and wife, Amy, Randall Carr and wife, Tamber, Carrie Bower and husband, Luke; great grandchildren, Kinnan Perryman and husband, Wyatt, Case Martin, Cole Martin, Katleigh Carr, Allie Carr, Madellynn Rodriguez and husband, Michael, Gracie Smith, Mason Collins, Jaxon Collins, Brayden Carr, Rylan Carr, Byrnn Carr, Annabelle Bower, John Luke Bower, Amberlynn Bower.
