Virgil Jones Obituary

 Virgil A. Jones of Mount Vernon passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2020 in Arlington, Texas after a lengthy battle with Covid.

Services are to be held on October 31, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Mount Vernon church of Christ with Brother Chip Horton and Brother Larry Black officiating.  Interment will follow at the Talco Cemetery under direction of Harvey Funeral Home.  Pallbearers are Rusty Jones, Barry Jones, Greg Jones, Stan Jones, Joe Rose and Jerrod Hammond.  Honorary Pallbearers are Finley Barnett, Freddy Toombs, Billy Bob Toombs, Doug Blackard and Charles Fendley.

Mr. Jones was born March 20, 1943 in Talco, TX, the 12th and final child to Felix and Ruth Cato Jones.  He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen Arlynn Johle Jones of Mount Vernon; son, Lance Jones of Lindale, TX; son-in-law and daughter, Brett and Anissa Gray of Lubbock, TX; daughter, Kenlea Richards of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Ashley and Lynnzie Gray of Lubbock, TX, Dylan Bolton of Mount Vernon; one brother, Lon Jones and wife Mary of Weatherford, TX and one sister, Nelda Kelsoe and husband James of North Richland Hills, TX; sisters-in-law, Amy Jones of Mount Pleasant, TX and Annette Jones of Reno, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, F.A. Jones, Boyd Jones, Jerry Jones, John Paul Jones, Bill G. Jones, Cato Jones; sisters, Annah Ruth Brown, Winnell Blackard, Lavon Jones; sisters-in-law, Nora Jones, Vestal Jones, Dorothy Jones and Billie Jones.

Virgil graduated from Talco High School, attended Abilene Christian College and graduated from the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking.  He served in the US Army Reserve and National Guard.  Virgil married the love of his life, Helen, on February 5, 1966.  He began his career as a bank examiner for the state of Texas.  Virgil and family moved to Merkel, TX in 1975 where he was the Vice President of Farmers and Merchants National Bank.  He served as President of the Merkel Lions Club and the Sun Water Board.  He enjoyed being part of the Merkel Country Club and Bass Club.  Virgil and long-time friend, Finley Barnett were the film crew for Merkel High School football games.

Virgil moved back to east Texas in 1992.  He was an active member in every community he lived in.  He was President at Guaranty Bank and Trust in Deport, Bogata, Talco and Mount Vernon.  He was a member of the Prairiland School Board and announcer at the Prairiland High School football games.  He was instrumental in the development of the Rivercrest Education Foundation, which provides scholarships for local students.  He served on the Board of Directors for Cypress Basin Hospice.  He served as President of Mount Vernon Rotary Club and was named a Paul Harris Fellow.

Virgil loved to sing and lead singing at church.  He was an active member and song leader of the Mount Vernon church of Christ and past member and song leader at Blossom church of Christ in Blossom, TX and Merkel church of Christ in Merkel, TX.  He was a loving husband, and exceptional father and grandfather.  He was an avid golfer and loved football.   Virgil lived a life of service to the church, his community, and his family.  He touched many lives through this service and was a blessing to know.
