William James Stretcher

Graveside services for William James Stretcher will be Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at the Mount Vernon City Cemetery with Bro. Pepper Puryear officiating.  There will be a come and go visitation Tuesday, April 14, 2020 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home.

William James “Buddy” Stretcher of Mount Vernon, Texas was called home by the Lord on Sunday, April 12, 2020.  He was born on October 18, 1924, to Cyril and Jessie Stretcher at their home in north Franklin County.  Buddy lived for 95 years within 100 yards of his birthplace.  He served in the army during WWII as an aircraft gunner in New Guinea, the Philippines, and with the occupational army in Japan.  After the service, he became a cattle rancher working 350 acres and later developed a commercial catfish farm with 68 surface acres of ponds.  He also worked for Winzen Research for nine years in addition to his agricultural endeavors.

Mr. Stretcher was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joe Dan, Frank, and Charles. Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Juanita “Polly” Stretcher;  four children, Larry Millikin and wife Hope of Mount Vernon, Ann and husband Dale Sellers of Mount Vernon, Jeri and husband Charlie Mitchell of Pleasant Hill, Tenn., and Ronnie Millikin of Mount Vernon. He had five grandchildren, John Letot and wife Missy, Jessica and husband Kris White, Kodi and husband Matt Story, Will Mitchell, and Josh Mitchell and wife Tiffany.  He also leaves 15 great grandchildren.
